    Luocheng Ancient Town is situated in the southeast of Leshan Prefecture. The ship-shaped street was constructed in the year of 1628. The town used to be an army station during the Ming Dynasty(1368-1644) and the Qing Dynasty(1644-1911). The town features the local traditional architecture and folk customs. In 1982, an Australian visited the old town. He was surprised to see the ship-shaped street. Later, the Australian built a similar one in Melbourne and named it China Town. Since then, Luocheng Ancient Town has become well-known in the world.

    The Ship-shaped Street

    The Ship-shaped Street is 209 meters(686 feet) long and 9.5 meters(31 feet) wide. It is flanked by old houses on both sides. At the middle section of the street, there is a wooden pavilion. It is a platform for performers to sing and dance. In front of the platform, there are two corridors. The corridors provide shade for tea drinkers in the summer.

 

    Lingguan Temple

    The temple was built in 1754. Lingguan is a god worshiped by Taoists. He serves as the god of thunder and the god of fire. However, the locals in Luocheng Ancient Town pray in the temple for rain.

    How to Get to Luocheng Ancient Town

    Luocheng Ancient Town lies in the southeast of Leshan, about 50 kilometers(31 miles) from the city proper. The distance between Chengdu and Leshan is about 135 km(84 miles). It takes about two and a half hours to get to the ancient town from Chengdu by a car. Some people also ride a bullet train to Leshan or Qianwei from either the South Chengdu Railway Station or the East Chengdu Railway Station, and then take a bus or car to the Luocheng Ancient Town.

 

    The Specialties of Luocheng

    The locals love Sichuan food. The town is inhabited by the Han and some minorities, such as the Hui people, the Yi people, the Miao people, the Li people, the Manchus, the Mongols and the Tibetans. That is the reason why various kinds of food can be found in the town. Among those dishes, the Mutton Casserole and the Ye’erba Steamed Bun are the most famous local specialties. The latter is made of glutinous rice and is stuffed with meat.
